How Does the Function Reflect the Culture?
The functions of a family reflect the culture of the family. Canadian families reflect more love and affection for their children than other cultures where love is expressed in different ways through perhaps how much power they have in the famiy unit. Because Canada is so multicultural, the functions for each individual family are changing. Some expect children to be more responsible than others. Some families expect their children to contribute to the economic functions of the family while others stress the independence of children. Some types of families express their feelings to their children better than other families can.
All of these changes add to the wonderful diverstiy of Canada. However, even with these differences, all families need to fulfill their economic and psychological functions. Without regards to culture or ethnic diversity, all families need money to support themselves and they all need to fulfill some type of pyschological function. Every individual needs love and support from somewhere, and this is best attained from the family.

Why is This Important?
The economic and psychological functions of the family are extremely important to show what an impact it has on society. Society has to realize that without families, the whole economic system will fail. We have to realize that children need family, for it is the prime socialization agent.
When we see how the family unit is depleting, we should realize that this must be fixed. With poor family conditions, children can suffer from many negative behaviours and not be as strong and successful. If this continues, a weaker generation will rise, which would mean that the dependancy load will suffer terribly becuase first of all they cannot take care of themselves, and nor can those who are to be working. Many problems come when the psychological needs in a family are not met, and no one would want it to come to this.
With a strong functional family, we will have postive individuals come out to make a differnce for those who do not have it as good as they had it. If we can make a difference and help those who suffer from poverty in their homes, or from abuse or lonliness, we can form a stronger society. The more people who realize the importance of making sure the psychological and economic functions of a family are fulfilled, the more awareness we can bring to those who need the help.
We need and want a strong society to support the next generations. If this does not happen, the entire society will fail. When we analyze this, we realize how important family is: it is the foundation of health and economics. Together we can make a difference and bring awareness to those families who do not fulfill the psychological and economic functions of the family.
When we think of poverty that strickens many families, we know that many opportunites are withheld from these children. If the parents had money they could get a better education or feel stronger and better about themselves. This is why it is so important that the economic functions of the family are fulfilled. We never want to limit anyone to the extent of their dreams of a job or a career. When these needs are met, the children can go way farther in life, and be more confident.
When the psychological needs are not met, we think of those who have are sucidal, depressed, or have other types of behavioural or emotional problems that they struggle with. Love, acceptance, and respect are the most important things a person would want. When they have no meaning in life, then such problems can arise. When they are loved and wanted, they are far more healthier and contribute well to society.
However, we must not think that every family who does not have teh economic or psychological needs met is a dysfunctional family. Sometimes these needs are met in different ways that we do not know or understand based on culture or ethnography. Children who do live in these conditions can very well be more successful than those who do not live in these conditions. It technically does come down to the individual and how well they respond to their situation and how well they can deal with it. We must remember though, that the better the family structure, the easier it will be to deal with these problems.
In the end, we want to encourage families to meet the economic and psychological needs of their members. Any negative behaviour that could arise when these needs are not met, we want to discourage and avoid by making everyone aware of the needs that need to be met. Therefore, we want to focus on prevention rather than intervention.
